I began creating art as a child, inspired by my personal need to create something beautiful and strong. My mother encouraged all of her children to experiment in any and all mediums. One of the most enduring in our household was quilting. By the time I was a teenager, I was sure I would become a fashion designer, even though I was developing painting and design work that was already on display. A scholarship to art school led me to focus on design, painting and sculpture.
I realized that I could apply the style and techniques I had developed in other art forms . . . to quilting. My challenge was to expand the tradition of quilting into a new vision of my world. I moved from two dimensional fiber art to three dimensional “art quilts.”
I want these sculptures to express ageless strength, shaping the future as clearly as earlier forms of quilting shaped our past.
My goal was to keep the image beautifully simple, expressing an inner light.
